Belton

Dubart "Bert" Mizell passed away peacefully on Sept. 14, 2026, after suffering a major stroke in December 2025. He was born on Oct. 18, 1953, in Austin, Texas to parents Elaine Herring Mizell and Lt. Colonel Dan Jackson Mizell. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Cynthia Freytag Mizell.

Bert was an “Army Brat” and the Mizell family lived in several states and Germany over the years. The family settled in Belton, Texas, where he graduated from Belton High School. Bert continued his education at Southwest Texas State University. In 1978, he met his wife, Cindy, who would become his partner in all things fun and exciting. They both developed a love for sailing, starting out with a Catalina 27. From there, the two of them went on to sailing a Valiant 40 which they had moved from Lake Belton to Kemah, Texas. They spent a year sailing the beautiful U.S. coast and the Bahamas which led to numerous adventures. Those adventures spawned the famous “Uncle Bert” stories. Over the years, he would tell those stories over and over. The only one to let us know if the stories were really true was his wife when she would shake her head or nod vigorously. His legendary stories are what his family on both sides will always remember. He was master of storytelling to say the least.

Bert and Cindy worked together in various business adventures over the years while Cindy practiced full time as a pharmacist. Some of those included his partnership with his father-in-law, Frank Freytag. Together they opened the Little River Switch Restaurant. Bert went on to own a carpet cleaning business and, lastly, Advantage Picture Framing. To say that Bert was a Renaissance Man and a Jack of All Trades is an understatement. He never met a stranger and never ceased to tell those he met all of his sailing stories or anything else he could dream up!

Bert’s survivors include his wife and siblings, Renee Mizell Parrett (Tommy), Lisa Mizell Taylor (John) and Danny Mizell. His other family members include Richard Freytag (Donna), Deborah Freytag Green (Dennis), Gary Freytag and David Freytag. He is also survived by 30 nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews. These are the ones who will carry on with all of his tales.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Private services will be held for his family. Those desiring to honor his memory may make donations to the charity of their choice. Dossman Funeral Home in Belton is in charge of his burial wishes.
