Betty Guyer was born on August 13, 1943, in Waco, TX. She was the daughter of O.L. Southern and Eloise Horton Southern. She married Archie Lee Guyer on June 23, 1961. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2013, her parents, and her brother, Kenneth.
Betty is survived by her son and daughter, Kevin Guyer and Kay Kelly; her five grandchildren; and her fifteen great-grandchildren, all of whom lovingly knew her as “Mimi.” She was a long-time member of the Church of Christ.
Betty was a graduate of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. She taught 3rd grade and reading intervention at Southwest Elementary for more than 30 years. She never stopped teaching, even when the final bell rang. Two of her most frequent lessons for her family were to never end a sentence with a preposition and to always keep trying foods you don’t like, because your taste buds change as you age.
Betty and Archie enjoyed sports together. They were huge Baylor University fans and loved watching the Little League World Series. You could always find her in the stands, cheering on her loved ones during their sporting events.
She also loved a good road trip, especially to a national park. Yellowstone will always remain her favorite. If you took a road trip with Betty, you could count on stopping to take pictures at every state sign and, quite likely, stopping to read every historical marker.
Her favorite holiday was Christmas. She loved decorating and displaying her extensive collection of Santa collectibles. She looked forward to meticulously picking out every gift and spoiled her family rotten. She will always be remembered for her fun Christmas games and for never failing to either forget to wrap a present or to wrap someone’s present with the wrong name on it.
When she wasn’t working or spending time with her family, you could find Betty enjoying an ice-cold morning Diet Coke, reading a Western novel that may or may not have been a little spicy, doing yard work, eating something sweet, playing a game of Solitaire, working on a puzzle, or asking if someone wanted to go play Bingo or have dinner with her at a Chinese buffet.
Betty was truly loved by many and will be deeply missed. Though she is gone, the lessons she taught and the love she gave will remain with us always.
